LEON IS A VICTIM ( A DANGAN RONPA PSA )

It gets me so god damn angry that a lot of the fandom call out Leon for being either a jerk or a malicious person and yo both those things are wrong and I’ve gone on and on about the jerk thing before so here’s a PSA about the ‘malicious’ part.

Short Summary: Leon had no choice.

Long Summary:

First of all let’s look at the two most common arguments about the fact that Leon actually went back and killed Sayaka.

A: He could have told someone.

Response: Who the fuck would have believed him.

No seriously.

Let’s look at the facts by the point Sayaka was in the bathroom:

  • She was injured (her wrist was broken when Leon used the sword to DEFEND HIMSELF FROM BEING STABBED)
  • Leon had already taken the knife so she was WITHOUT A WEAPON
  • She was scared out of her fucking mind because her plan to murder failed so now she was in deep shit (she did sort of dig her own grave though, to be perfectly honest)

Now given that scenario, who would you believe if you didn’t know what had happened? A scared, INJURED GIRL with NO WEAPON who’d locked HERSELF in a bathroom? Or the guy who’d taken the knife, had no visible injuries, and let’s face it based solely on personality and looks and what everyone else at that point in time knew, SAYAKA WAS MORE BELIEVABLE AND TRUSTWORTHY THAN A PUNK KID LIKE LEON

ESPECIALLY FOR NAEGI. NAEGI DID THE ROOM SWITCH TO PROTECT SAYAKA BECAUSE SHE MADE UP (MADE THE FUCK UP) THAT SOMEONE WAS AFTER HER. BUT HE WAS SCARED FOR HER AND BELIEVED HER. HE’D HAVE CLEANED LEON’S CLOCK IN TWO SECONDS WITHOUT EVEN HEARING THE STORY BECAUSE AS THE FACTS HE KNOW STOOD, SAYAKA WAS THE ONE IN DANGER.

Even if Leon went to someone like Sakura Oogami, who would have calmly accessed the situation without jumping to blame or conclusions, there still stands the second issue:

A: Leon didn’t have to kill her.

Response: He was dead if he didn’t.

EVEN IF LEON LET HER LIVE DO YOU THINK SAYAKA WOULD HAVE JUST LET THIS GO BY?

No fucking way.

Leon knew what she was really like. Leon knew the truth that she was trying to murder. IF SOMEONE DIED AND IT WASN’T LEON HE’D KNOW IT WAS SAYAKA. If she killed someone else to fulfill her plan she’d be put under heavy suspicion by him. MEANING LEON WOULD BE A DANGER TO HER. And I’m pretty damn sure Leon knew that.

HE WAS AFRAID.

HE WAS SCARED OUT OF HIS MIND FOR HIS OWN LIFE.

If he let her go nothing guaranteed his safety, and especially if he didn’t talk about it, it would have been easy for her to find another way to kill him and still escape the blame. She was pretty damn smart with her plan, and if Leon wasn’t physically stronger than her with trained reflexes from baseball, she would have succeeded. It was only her physical make-up that saved her. That and that sword that she HAD NAEGI PLACE THERE. Good thinking on that one, Sayaka.

So in all honestly, if Leon Kuwata didn’t kill Sayaka Maizono, he was in VERY REAL AND HEAVY DANGER of being killed himself.

There is always the slim possibility he’d get out of it.

That possibility did exist, I am not denying that yes, it did in fact exist. But it remains a fact that he was in danger, whether he would have died from it or not.

And in that situation of total fear and panic, that possibility doesn’t exist in Leon’s mind.

It really was SELF-DEFENSE.

AND BY THAT I MEAN THAT WAS HIS MOTIVATION. Now whether one can legally call that 'self defense’ by objective terms is definitely arguable, and it’s true that he didn’t have to go back and kill her, but in his mind it was not MALICE driving him. IT WAS NOT HATRED.

TO LEON KUWATA HE WAS DEFENDING HIS OWN LIFE.

It was HIM OR HER.

THERE IS NO SECOND OPTION.

Now with both of those responses in place let me get to my final argument which is that Leon Kuwata, I FEEL MORE THAN SAYAKA MAIZONO, was a VICTIM.

The definition of victim is:

  • one that is injured, destroyed, or sacrificed under any of various conditions

There’s one word that stands out in that. Can’t see it?

SACRIFICED.

That’s essentially what Leon was.

He was nothing but Sayaka’s planned sacrifice.

He didn’t answer her summons to kill her. Fuck no. HE HAD NO MALICIOUS INTENT WHEN HE WALKED INTO THAT ROOM.

NONE. AT ALL. THERE WAS NO PLAN TO KILL HER.

HE WAS ANSWERING THE CALL OF A GIRL THAT HE IDOLIZED, A FUCKING CELEBRITY OF WHAT HE WANTED TO BE, A SINGER.

Would you have said no to that call?

OF FUCKING COURSE NOT DON’T YOU LIE TO ME.

But the minute he walked in and she drew the knife Leon Kuwata became a sacrifice. A victim.

Without Sayaka making a strike against him I HIGHLY DOUBT Leon would have murdered anyone in that situation. He didn’t have an intention of murder. He didn’t kill Sayaka to 'murder’ her he killed her so he could live.

Sayaka didn’t need to kill to live, she MALICIOUSLY ATTEMPTED MURDER for the sake of GETTING OUT. Something that wasn’t at the risk of her physical life, just her desires. And by desires, I mean her desire to get outside. Her life wasn’t threatened by monobear, not physically. Meanwhile Leon’s physically life was threatened by Sayaka. The difference here is Sayaka could have SURVIVED without her friends and without her career, even if it would have had a mental toll. Leon can’t survive if he’s, you know, DEAD.

Leon Kuwata killed someone so he could live. He didn’t have another option, nothing plausible, especially to a scared as fuck teenage boy at least. Nothing he nor ANYONE ELSE IN THAT POSITION would have thought of.

Seriously put Mondo there and you’ll get the same result.

The only people that would have procured different results are people like Sakura who could have calmly handled the situation and who SAYAKA COULDN’T HAVE KILLED IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Seriously she couldn’t even overpower Leon, the only person she probably could have killed would have been Naegi and MAYBE Aoi not because Aoi is weak hell no but she’s much more open, forgiving, and honestly, gullible that she wouldn’t have sensed the threat because she believes in the good side of people, especially someone like Sayaka.

So almost anyone would have been put in Leon’s position of making an enemy out of Sayaka if they let her live. And in that situation that’s a damn threat on ANYONE’S LIFE.

Case and point is that Leon Kuwata was a VICTIM OF CIRCUMSTANCE.

THAT IS THE TYPE OF VICTIM. A VICTIM OF CIRCUMSTANCE.

AND THAT IS 100% TRUE.

A victim of something he DIDN’T plan. Something he DIDN’T control. Something he DIDN’T intend. Something he DIDN’T want.

But he had no choice but to do because of the circumstances.

HE DIDN’T WANT TO KILL HER. HE DIDN’T ENTER THAT ROOM OR START THAT DAY OR LIVE HIS LIFE WITH ANY FUCKING PLANS TO.

IT WAS MERELY THAT HE HAD NO OTHER FUCKING OPTION.

SO STOP PULLING THE VICTIM CARD FOR SAYAKA AND ESPECIALLY STOP MAKING HER INNOCENT SHE FUCKING ISN’T (she made her fucking bed and she had to sleep in it she started this bullshit)

AND INSTEAD REALIZE THAT LEON WAS MORE OF A VICTIM.

THIS DOESN’T MAKE HIS ACTIONS RIGHT NOR PERFECT.

BUT HE IS NOT A BAD PERSON.

AND I WILL PUNCH THE NEXT PERSON WHO SAYS SO IN THE THROAT.
